Paraformaldehyde
Claro India Limited (CIL) decided to exploit the Paraformaldehyde
technology developed by LCS and placed an order for license, know-how,
basic and detailed engineering, procurement assistance, project management
and erection cum commissioning supervision. The capacity of the plant
was 1,500 MTPY and it was located near Chennai in Tamil Nadu, India.
This was the first commercial scale plant in India.India was almost entirely
dependent on imports of paraformaldehyde till then. The plant was commissioned
in the end of 1993 and the product was well received and accepted across
the section of industry including its use in pesticides and pharmaceutical
industries.

Formaldehyde
For the sake of economy, CIL decided to carry out the backward integration
by putting up a plant for manufacture of Formaldehyde from Methanol using
granular silver as catalyst. The capacity of the plant was 12,000 MTPY
and the contract was awarded to LCS for license, know-how, basic engineering,
procurement assistance, project management and erection cum commissioning
supervision.
The project was completed within a period of 10 months and the plant was
commissioned in May 1996 successfully producing 37% Formaldehyde with
4 to 5 % Methanol directly without distillation, utilizing water Methanol
mixture as the basic raw material.
