Hexamine

Saudi Formaldehyde Chemical Co. Ltd. (SFCCL) a Saudi Arabian Private Sector - Formaldehyde manufacturer, wanted to diversify and produce various products starting from Formaldehyde. Hexamine was the first venture wherein after investigating various European and Indian sources of this technology, SFCCL selected LCS for know-how, basic and detailed engineering services, equipment supply, and erection cum commissioning assistance.

The capacity of the plant was initially 7 MTPD which was later expanded to 14 MTPD . Continuous centrifuging using a pusher centrifuge was used by LCS which improved the quality of final product and SFCCL could export this Hexamine to about 27 countries across the world.

SFCCL signed a Contract for Paraformaldehyde technology and engineering services in the year 1996. The equipment supply contract was given to Messrs. Larsen & Toubro Ltd., one of the largest EPC companies in India. The capacity of the plant was 5,000 MTPA where LCS carried out the basic, detailed engineering and erection cum commissioning assistance. The project was successfully commissioned in September 1998 and the product has been well accepted and is exported to many European countries, Africa and Australia.

  • SFCCL'S Methanolic/Butanolic Plant.

After commissioning of Paraformaldehyde plant, SFCCL found demand for Methanolic/Butanolic solution of Formaldehyde. LCS had the know-how of this product starting from powder Paraformldehyde. The contract was awarded in July 1999 and the project was completed in 2000. LCS supplied the license, know-how, basic and detailed engineering services including equipment supply and commissioning services. Alcoholic solutions of Formaldehyde have applications in coating industry, ion exchange resin manufacturing and such other special reactions of resins.

    Evaluation Report.

"Pentaerythritol" is a down stream product based upon Formaldehyde and having applications in the paint and lubricating oil industry.

LCS was given the task by SFCCL to evaluate various technology transfer offers received by them and that are available world over.

LCS carried out detailed investigation of various technologies for Pentaerythritol starting from Formaldehyde, Acetaldehyde and Caustic Soda as raw material, compared the yields and grades/quality of product and provided a detailed investigation report with the recommendation for SFCCL to tie up the technology. Ultimately LCS recommended its own technology which incorporates electro - dialysis to separate Sodium formate stream from Pentaerythritol stream and high pressure splitting to convert formals back to mono - penta.

    SFCCL - Formaldehyde Deacidifier Project

SFCCL stores 37% aqueous Formaldehyde in tanks under slightly hot conditions. At such temperature over a period of time the Formic Acid content of Formaldehyde increases and therefore product needs to be de-acidified before dispatch.

LCS supplied on turnkey basis a De-acidifier, based upon Anion exchange resins, to selectively reduce Formic Acid content of such Formaldehyde. The arrangement is made to continuously re-circulate the tank material through de-acidifier or regular basis.

  • SFCCL - Hexamine Additional Facilities.

Hexamine is available in the market in various grades. The major grades are unstabilized Hexamine, stabilized (free flowing) Hexamine, powder Hexamine and special rubber grade Hexamine mixed with certain additives. The existing Hexamine plant of SFCCL was not equipped to produce all these grades which are basically Hexamine product in special physical form with or without additives.

LCS provided complete turn key plant for additional facilities which included the know-how, basic and detailed engineering, equipment supply and commissioning assistance starting from drying operation of Hexamine to achieve better moisture properties in the product. The equipment supply has already been completed in May 2002.The plant has been successfully commissioned.

    SFCCL'S Effluent Treatment Cum Hexamine
    Recovery Project.

The Hexamine plant of SFCCL has a liquid effluent comprising of 1.5 to 2% of entrained Hexamine in water along with excess Ammonia. Presently this goes to Effluent Treatment plant where it is treated before final discharge.

LCS conceived and suggested a multiple effect evaporator system for treating the effluent to concentrate and recover Hexamine which can be re-cycled to Hexamine plant for recovery. Ammonia is also stripped and recovered as a concentrated aqueous solution. The concentrated aqueous solution is recycled back to Hexamine plant whereas the water after recovery of Hexamine and Ammonia from effluent is used as a "make up" to cooling tower. Thus the scheme makes this as a close loop project eliminating major effluent treatment requirement.

LCS has supplied the complete plant on 2 skids respectively for triple effect evaporator and for ammonia distillation. The scope included basic and detailed engineering, equipment supply on skids and commissioning assistance. The plant has been successfully commissioned.

SFCCL'S Formaldehyde Recovery (Excess water) Project.

SFCCL's existing Formaldehyde plants, as well as, the Paraformaldehyde plant has a by - product (Excess Water) aqueous Formaldehyde with 3% concentration.

SFCCL asked LCS to find the ways and means to recover Formaldehyde from this excess water. LCS based upon the literature survey conducted the R&D and pilot plant experiments for distillation column which can provide 35% to 40% Formaldehyde as the top product and less than 0.2% Formaldehyde as the bottom product. The top product can be recycled /sold as standard aqueous 37% solution while the bottom product can be used as water for absorption in Formaldehyde plant or excess can be sent to effluent treatment plant requiring negligible treatment.

LCS based upon the pilot plant trials designed a column for distillation of Formaldehyde under high pressure, completed the basic and detailed engineering and supplied the equipment on a skid. The plant has been successfully commissioned.
